Aside from his notable collection of stellar shades, Kim Jong Il is best known for his prowess as the most tyranical dictator on the planet, a title one imagines he gladly represents. As the good dictator is in the twilight of his fear-inducing career, he has been vetting his youngest son, Kim Jong Eun to take over his reign of terror when he is gone. The Eun one has been made general of the vast, yet technologically devoid North Korean army, and will likely be appointed leader/dictator/secretary of terror once his pops finally kicks the bucket. The good people at NMA put together this humorous animation so the world can better understand the vetting process in North Korea - looks like they don't think much of the "great leader" either...

I picked this vid by Los Cuartes de Sinaloa, because I chill (fish and smoke on the mexican mountain cheeba) in Sinaloa every year, and El Chapo is seriously EL JEFE. i was digging around for footage of Dock Ellis' No hitter (which, seems to not exist on the web) and found this animated short by some artiste named James Blagden. the clips pretty funny, the story is EPIC and true. Dude pitched a No-Hitter on a head full of LSD in 1970, definitely the most notorious drug enduced sports moment. I mean, it makes sense that pitchers in the eighties could bring the heat on a face full of cocaine, but tripping on acid? That's bananas... I mean, Never has a NY Met even thrown a No-No (ever), and this guy did it tripping his face off on LSD and a gaggle of other stimulants. Dock Ellis was a gentleman and a scholar, and a boss. As far as low-rent videos go, this one does the trick. It remains to be seen whether or not the Black Keys got pushed into releasing it by the label (as it states in yellow in the video), but what do I care? The vid adds a bit of brevity to a track by a chronically moody group, and the song has that hammering blues-groove that made their earlier Rubber Factory so fresh despite its throw-back nostalgia (less-so (fresh) in more recent records). This is like the Rust Belt equivalent of a rap video, seeing how they have become the darlings of the rap-game the past few years (see BlakRoc) I'm sure their new-found friends will co-sign the swagger of this skin-filled clip. #SEXSELLSRECORDS

Notes on New York and other Grand Standing Rants (NEW YORK will NOT love You Back)

New York is dying for a comeback. After the great cultural vacuum of the 2000 era, when new york essentially became a charicature of itself - many will argue, but fuck it, this is my social theory (bozo). NYC just didn't have the edgy originality that made it epic in prior Generations - i blame many things for this, but most of it, it was that New York got dragged into the same jingoist patriotism that has always plagued much of our lands. I mean Osama is an asshole, and a sick fuck, and 9-11 was wack, but its end result was New York became a little more normal, more safe, more "centerist" (gross).

This flick reminded me of some club ish circa Tunnel - era (remember those needle-drenched clubs, Kidz) - probably because that was the last time I wore so much plaid (it needs to be re-retired). Some weirdo just popped his shades on me, flicked it up, gave 'em back, not my stee, sunglasses at night, just not a good look for grown folk (if anyone).
Unfortanately, It takes a LONG time to see any visible in NY. I mean change is possible, but said transformation takes a decade or so - maybe that's why they say "you're not a real New Yorker until you've lived here for at least 10 years" by "they," I mean other out-of-towners (craving identity or something) - I certainly didn't sign-off on that rule. New York is either in your blood, or you are a simply a resident of "The City." Being from here means less to me than it used to, as it should, some of the greatest New Yorkers originally came from somewhere else. It IS however a serious badge of honor(especially if you found yourself in the trenches of NY in the "roaring nineties"), this city can(and will) eat you alive, I've seen it happen, it's not a pretty site. The New York City Guild is always impressive, and we can always smell are fraud - well at least my peoples. Oh yeah, and this city will NOT love you back, get a dog.

Clearly I was late to the Momofuku noodle dance, but I really don't mind, the noodles are delicious and tender as ever (and I'm not one to wait on lines for food, or bread for that matter). As a child raised on Ramen (by choice, not a budgetary concern), Momofuku is a little taste of childhood, but all grown and sexy (yes noodles can be sexy if done to this level of perfection).

Lunch seems to be the move, as you can just walk-in (long Dinner-time lines are stat quo). A feast of delectable pork buns and noodles for days awaited us, and they did NOT disappoint. David Chang's career can likely go nowhere but onward and up, now expanding his noodle dynasty to bigger and better locales across New York and likely elsewhere. Chang even has the "keys to the bakery," (word is, his cookies are the best in New York, though I won't short sell Kathleen King just yet, and shall leave that debate to another time and place. For now, step your noodle game up, Nissin Ramen is for broke college kids, Momofuku is for the distinguishing noodle connoisseur, I'm goin' in....

Once the City thaws-out from a brutal winter season (maybe the worst in memory, if you count all the rain), it's time to ride-out. Instead of riding dirty in my vintage diesel-fueled Mercedes, I'm out riding bikes, making memories and exploring this vast city. While the rest of the country is drowning in empty buildings and foul leases, NYC seemed to be steeping-up its game. Case in Point: Wards Island used to be no-man's land, a dust-bowl armpit off the coast of east Manhattan. Now, It's all cleaned up, with a circumfrential bike-path and fields of actual green grass - still the site of a rather gnarly coo-coo facility, but a cool respite from "dreary old Manhattan," nonetheless...

Here's a little ditty from my trip to the Texas, South by South Fest was turned into Kanye West's play ground for a week, none of which i attended, by choice, and a need to see something fresh (not in that "I wear bright colors" stee). However, Kanye and his damage control definitely paid some dues, as many spindly hip journalists instantly changed fiddle when they heard they might meet the man. Whatever, i don't hate, i just think Kwest is annoying, and increasingly, so is his music. I did see Metallica (fuckin' epic, brah), one of the three "suprises" of this year's SXSW (along with Jane's at Hefs, which sadly i missed (boo hoo)).... Anyhow, this is what i saw down in the desert (the texas jewel that is Austin). Sans Metallica flicks, which i forewent as i was in need of a respite from said 18-hour tours of duty.

if you ask me, there is no way for one person, or even one outlet to cover southby proper. However, if you know what you like you can basically move through it pretty seamlessly, walking through the Southby insanity like it's a radio, walking in and over and out of whatever you like, provided you have some creds, or some money, or a whole lot of friends in Austin. It turns out smoking pot causes excessive cereal consumption (surprised?). The Huffington Post recently reported the Kellogg's brand has taken a bit hit (not of the sticky, I assure you) after vigilant potheads (go figure) banded together in a nation-wide ban on Kelloggs cereals - in a rather pathetic (and effective) show of solidarity for fellow stone-a-friend, Michael Phelps. Personally, I could give a shit if the guy is smoking the greens in the off-season, he's a grown-ass mer-man. Also, his full sweep of Olympic Gold medals is a pretty good indication that the pot hasn't stunted his motivation. Kellogg's should just be glad their Golden Boy got caught "ripping bing-ers," and not running a dog fighting racket, or getting all jacked-up on "the clear." Luckily for Kellogg's, most of the long-hairs involved in the ban will probably forget that they pledged their allegiance to said cause by the time of their next trip to the Supermarket. Or, when they find out Rice Krispie Treats are made with a Kellogg's cereal.

Making More Memories with the TEAM (facelift) at Webster Hall - Beef Included

Team Facelift played a quick set at Webster Hall on Tuesday. It was definitely the most fun I've had in a minute - harkening back to earlier more degenerate (and darker) shows at the dawn of this new millenia. When it was certainly not uncommon to heckle (or pummel) some asshole in the crowd who felt like popping shit, these people usually have no sense of humor, making for easy targets. Also, we always have some goons on layaway, so usually these altercations just make for some fun at some washed-up turkey's or neva-has-been lunatic's expense. At the end of the day, the combined efforts of a packed crowd, a couple bottles of free (and cheap) vodka and some wildey new dance tracks, made for another moment in Facelift Histerectomy. You shoulda been there, but there's usually a next time.

Little did I know when i we first went to the Angler's Inn, five years ago, that it is LITERALLY the best place to fish for Bass in the entire world. Red Bull SNOWSCRAPERS NYC: "On A Boat" at Mt. BARUCH

The Red Bull Snowscrapers event on Thurs. was pretty crazy, though addmittedly it was so fucking cold that i spent half of my time there on a Booze Cruise party ship, so i missed some of the action. Though the boat provided warmth from the frigid outside, and innumerable open bars, so i'd say i was thouroughly entertained throughout, good looks REDBULL, and the city of New York (i guess?). I did take a couple flicks of contestants (if i was getting paid i would probably list each of the riders, and talk about what sort of jumps they did of this massive kicker-hip on the East River Park) going "big".

Shaun White placed 6th, though still goes home to one of his appointed manses, and probably some snowbunny (or a redbull girl?). A dark-horse contestant from New Jersey Shayne Pospisil (im sure his name has been misspelled a lot in the past few days) and took home 50 K! I'm not mad at the kid, that money will go a long way in this economy, maybe he can get himself a proper website (what a stoner).

Sometimes I find myself wandering through the streets of New York with a camera late at night, scouring the City for visual artifacts. In an era where grass-roots marketing has moved to the web, some people, like this industrious photog (advertising in a Union Square phone booth), are holding on to the old way of spreading the word. Or, maybe he's on to something, as the city is strewn with low-rent creatives looking for a big-break. Maybe this break actually CAN be found in a photobooth. Luckily, this is not what I am looking for, and I honestly can't remember the last time I used a pay phone.

God, I am SO glad that I am NOT an actor. I prefer the DIY mentality of the artiste/muckraker I am fast becoming...

I have to say, watching Bruce Springsteen rock out the Super Bowl with the reckless abandon of an aged teenager it made me realize how he might be (as has been so well publicized) the ideal schlock-God for the global community of Meat-lovers watching this EPIC machine of an event that is, le Super Bowl. Really, he had that audience eating out of the palm of his blue-collar hands his after one shriek of his gruff howl, and I'm certainly not mad at it. Springsteen is the American Rock Icon who deserves such a beer-embattled raging audience as found at the Super Bowl, and he DEFINITELY knew what to do with said crowd.

Also, as much as i might not LIKE to admit it, he's probably one of the best ambassadors we (as an Americans) have going in the music world at this point. I mean, you find me someone with anything even remotely derogatory to say about "the Boss" in question? - then punch him in the mouth. The Boss puts on a damn good show in his twilight years, and sure as hell beats Cisco or Fuckin' Paul McCartney (were they SERIOUS?)

I'm not saying i listen to this so-called "boss" with much frequency, but i definitely have moments when Born to Run is JUST what the doctor ordered (don't front, you fucking music geeks...) Honestly, who can really argue with the merit of his Hit-Factory? Check out "born in the USA" if you're feeling nostalgic. EPIC 80's schlock done to poignant perfection.

Back from a spell in the Sierra Madres and some time in the Mountains of Colorado, I am rejuvenated. Touching down into Manhattan i am strangely invigorated by the signs of New York fast becoming the city i once loved - the city of recession and angst i once knew and always missed. Just like the rest, NY got High on free-money and eager to build bigger, better and more than the rest, now I see New York City's signs of duress in the form of closed stores, astronomical sales and despondent faces. A new President is a sign of hope (to many), but there is little than be done for the inevitable decline of abundant (illusions) of prosperity in New York - much moreso in some of the lands I have seen in my absence.

New York is about to get a little uglier than some have known it to be in the recent past, a habitat known-well by my merry band of miscreant friends and native associates. Guard your grill, stay sharp and don't bat an eye. Or, you could just hightail it back to the suburbs, which I would recommend to the out-a-town crowd...

I am back in NEW YORK, about to get into the muck and grind it out with the rest of 'em. Let's weed-out the weaklings, so that those who fly-high shall prosper and shine...

I literally saw a medium-sized Christmas tree rolling through the somewhat empty streets of the sunny Upper East Side, I was reminded of depression-era "dust-bowl" photographs (and the last recession which hit my family hard in the early nineties). Then I thought about what could be drawn from those downtrodden ordeals - more from hindsight than any sort of experiential knowledge - I was around 11 at that time. The Early Nineties; the US was at some war in Iraq, the nation was preaching the gospel of recession, and just remember watching most of the people around me struggling. Luckily, the radio was kicking out the jams (all that angst had to go somewhere).

But I digress, as the point is not some saddo-whiny blogerhia, more a brief thought on financial crisises. The last one hurt me directly, and many close to me much harder. We are now all stronger, and far more interesting for it. As some asshole poet once said, "some shit about there's beauty in suffering or somthing." This world we revolve in is highly cyclical. Did you really think something can grow so fast, without some kind of reactionary fall - or collapse?

Guard your grills, stop spending that "free-money," and grind it out like the rest of 'em. I will try to do the same - but I'm not stressing. Lessons were gravely learned from '92...

Tor Hamer: Gentleman, Scholar & NY's King of the Ring...

Recently I was at a Holiday party and found myself indulging in a little name-gaming, which can be very hard to avoid (especially this time of year). Next thing i know, this kid asks me, "so, do you know Tor?" Granted, many people in the city know Tor, if not personally for the sheer fact that he's a beast of a man, and his name is impossible to forget. I mean, his government IS really, TOR HAMER (i went to school with him, and have known him long enough to know that his name is NOT a stunt, more an omen). Anyhow, if Tor was not born to be a boxing titan, i just don't know who would be. Not only can he throw down in the streets (and definitely in the ring), but as far as I've seen he's completely fearless.

That said, this guy Chris sent me some photos of Tor's last fight, and i just felt compelled to show at least one of them. New York might be on the brink of having it's own boxing heavyweight! Look how Tor lays the HAMER down on this clown...

I'm not sure who took these photos, but they are pretty dope. Next fight, I'm going to take my own photos, because i really want to see Tor pummel the next guy in person (sorry but I do!). Also find Tor in the recent Village Voice, i guess people are finally starting to realize that this kid is the truth!

Frito Lay Killed Chevy Chase! Or was it Coke...

There was a moment, when I sort of remember watching the career of one of my childhood film idols, (and model for much of the zany antics i have in my repertoire) whither up and die, only to be seen again in minor bit parts and self-referential drivel. After a long and thorough investigation into the life and career of Chevy Chase, I have decided that it was the moment that this Doritos commercial aired in 1994, was the moment the music died - the day Chevy Chase - actor/comedian/cocaine cowboy as we knew him passed onto VHS.

Chevy had a good run with a great name, a quick wit and a can-do(drugs) attitude, and thankfully, he has whithered into obscurity rather gracefully, and yes i did kind of like him on that Law and Order where he played the curmudgeonly bigot, but that wasn't much of a stretch, was it now Chevy Chaser?

Pete Wentz' Chubby Cousin: LIT-ERALLY Mangled

NYU chil'en's have roamed the streets and bars of the village area for many moons, and for me (and many of my scumbag, dilettante friends) they will always be minor nuisance. On the other hand, NYUsters can also be a source of great entertainment, as they commonly get uncontrollably drunk and act like lost children. While this usually occurs when I myself am in the throws of a serious binge with my soldiers of fortune, we tend to maintain, usually preferring to egg-them-on and sardonically praise their behaivior, to fully taking of our own FACES in public (save that for the after-hours champ).

This one looks like a chubby Pete Wentz.

Your dude was literally knocked out in the back of Lit - one of my favorite places to call it quits when i am running in the streets on weeknights, (i don't really fuck with them on the weekends, it's jammed with tourists, transients and trannies) for a night anyway. Say what you will about the assholes who pass through it, but Lit is a downtown institution of debauchery and excess. An establishment owned by a 'friend of the family' and anyone in the local 212, frequented by scummy hipsters and the girls who love them, Young Turks and Cocoas, Graf kings and the jocks who follow, drunks, drugsters, the delinquent, and the decadent, Lit lives up to it's name. This kid is proof. When the face comes off, the demons come out...

I wonder if dude knows that those "fur" hats they sell on the block are fashioned from rat pelts?

Note: in no way is this infant in any way related to Pete Wentz, if he was, he'd prob be comatose at Anglos and Dragons or whatever Wentz's LES watering-hole is called.

Don't get me wrong...at night, this part of the south bronx would have me shook, but i like to drive around the outer bouroughs and see whats popping in the fringes of New York City. It enables me to wander around aimlessly without being mistaken for a mark-ass-buster...Nah Mean? I roll around in a old school big-body Benz, the hood obliges.

The Answer: An intrepid (and disgruntled) Iraqi journalist aware of both the power of YouTube, and the apparent shortage of eggs in Iraq and the fact that he did anything further, he would be spending the rest of his life in sunny Guantanamo Bay. In one of the funniest political statements ever made on the global stage, an Iraqi journalist threw his wing-tips (yep, both of them) straight at the head at ol' Georgia W. Bush at a press conference to announce god knows what. Apparently his reflexes are much quicker than his wit, because deposed bush was able to dodge both shoes with the ---- of a boxer (don king agrees (thx TMZ ).

Not only was this a striking blow to the final days of the Bush regime but one of the greatest political media moments since the great bush-pukes-on-Chinese-dignitary incident of 2001. While I'm not sure how quickly the next administration will be able to stabilize out bumbling economy, anything is better than bush...

I mean, don't you love how him and his handlers basically abandoned the white house the day they realized the good ol' party was over - the next day, Obama comes strutting out onto white house long. Finally, some really entertaining politics...

It seems Q-Tip was keeping it funky out at the House of Blues with some thin, boring live band, and Prince, who must have been playing the slots nearby must have noticed a need for some lead guitar, or he just took it upon himself to alleviate the boredom that is a Q-tip show in this day and age.

Check out Prince jump on stage during "Vivrant Thing" grab an ol' guitar and provide a swanky little guitar riff, then jump right of the stage and recede into the back of the club (or, possibly out the door). That is like, SOOO Prince. Also, upon trying to link the man's website, I came a cross the interesting fact that it seems PRINCE DOES NOT HAVE A WEBSITE - now THAT, is gangster...only if your absurdly famous.

This my friends, is how you become a Rock Legend, and not just some corny pop-icon. You're killing it Prince. Q-Tip, Eh,keep it moving...
